Brother Offers AirPrint Updates

Brother International today announced its support for AirPrint in several color inkjet all-in-one printers. AirPrint support allows these printers to be used directly from iOS apps on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches.

Some of these printer models are already shipping and therefore may need a printer firmware update in order to support AirPrint.

Printing to an AirPrint Printer from OS X

The promise of AirPrint is the ability to print without first installing printer drivers. iOS uses AirPrint to print from iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. But OS X Lion can use AirPrint as well.

In OS X Lion, to add a printer and to use AirPrint, first open the System Preferences Print & Scan panel.

Use the ‘+’ button on the left side of the panel to select “Add Other Printer or Scanner…” and to open the Add Printer window. The resulting window will show all of the printers on your network that can be seen by Bonjour. Click your AirPrint printer in this list and select “AirPrint Printer” from the menu at the bottom of the window.

Finally click the ‘Add’ button. This will create a new printer entry on your Mac that uses AirPrint to print instead of a printer driver written by your printer’s manufacturer.

AirPrint provides useful settings under the print dialog’s “Presets” menu. These settings depend upon the type of printer being used:

This technique will work with any of the printers on Apple’s list of AirPrint printers. The following printers were used for the examples above:

HP LaserJet Pro CP1525nw Color Printer (CE875A)

HP LaserJet Pro CP1525nw Color Printer

HP Photosmart Premium Wireless e-All-in-One

The Many Faces of the iOS Print Panel

In iOS the options presented in the print panel on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch depend upon the application being used and the features of your printer. Here we’ll take a look at how the print panel changes across applications and printers.

Photo Printing

The iOS Photo app presents a very simple print panel. The user can select the number of copies to print but the printer will choose the photo paper size based on the loaded paper size.

There are printers, at this time primarily those from Lexmark, that know all of their loaded paper sizes. When the printer can tell iOS the list of loaded paper sizes then that list is presented to the user:

Safari Printing

When printing from Safari the option to print multiple copies is still present but, for duplex printers, the option to print double-sided is also present.

PDF Printing

When printing a PDF document from Mail, Safari, or iBooks the user is given the option to select a range of pages.

Printers

For these examples the following printers were used:

HP Photosmart Premium Wireless e-All-in-One

Lexmark C925

Lexmark AirPrint Office Color Lasers

Apple recently updated their list of AirPrint capable printers with some high capacity Lexmark color laser printers suitable for medium to large offices.

The Lexmark C925 color laser printer can print pages up to tabloid size and is rated at 30 pages per minute. This printer has been shipping for some time but Lexmark has released a firmware update to give it AirPrint compatibility.

Using AirPrint to Print Various Photo Sizes

AirPrint makes it very easy to print photos from your iOS device to an AirPrint capable printer. But because the Photo app doesn’t offer a paper size selection it gives the impression that it can only print photos at one size. This is not the case and printing different size photos is very easy.

In order to print a photo from within the Photo app choose the photo and then tap the action icon (the hook) located in the lower left of the display.

Tapping Print will show the print panel. For most printers there will only be a single option: the number of copies to print.

So, how to change the printed photo size? The answer is simple, just change the photo paper in your printer.

Using our HP Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One as an example

we usually have 4x6 photo paper loaded in the printer’s photo tray. When we print from the iOS Photo app the photo is printed on to the 4x6 paper scaled up to completely fill the paper.

<

In order to print 5x7 photos we just load 5x7 photo paper in to the Photosmart and print again. There’s no need to change any settings on the iOS device. AirPrint works with the printer, sees that there is 5x7 photo paper loaded, and prints a 5x7 full-bleed photo.

It all makes sense when you stop to think about it. In order to print on different sized paper you need to load the new paper in to the printer. You really shouldn’t have to do anything else. We’ve been conditioned by the overly complicated print dialogs on our computers to expect a paper size selection but it’s not needed here.

Postscript

In order to properly adapt to a change in the loaded photo paper size the printer needs to have the necessary sensors. Some low end printers do not have these sensors and they always try to print 4x6 photos. The HP printers that include photo trays do include the required sensors.

AirPrint Multifunction Inkjet Recommendations

Apple’s list of AirPrint compatible printers includes a large assortment of multifunction inkjets. In order to make choosing an AirPrint printer easier here our our recommendations.

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One

The OfficeJet Pro 8600 is HP’s second generation AirPrint OfficeJet. It prints very quickly and generates crisp documents. The printer also does a good job printing 4x6 photos.

Epson Artisan 837 Color Inkjet Wireless All-In-One

Epson’s Artisan 837 features six-ink color output. While the Artisan does a good job printing documents it shines when printing photos.

HP Photosmart Premium Wireless e-All-in-One

The HP Photosmart Premium is not as fast as the HP OfficeJet 8600 and it does not boast 6 ink colors like the Artisan 837 but it does offer a low cost compromise between the two printers. Available for around $100 this printer can produce crisp two-sided documents and, thanks to its photo tray, does a great job printing both 4x6 and 5x7 photos.

Six-Ink AirPrint Photo Printers

Most of the printers that support AirPrint are inkjets. Most of these printers use the traditional four ink colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Four color inkjets such as the HP Photosmarts do a great job printing out photos from your iPhone and iPads but there are a couple of AirPrint printers that use more than four inks.

The Epson Artisan Artisan 730 and the Epson Artisan 837 are six ink printers that add light cyan and light magenta inks to the traditional set. Extra inks can allow a printer to print a wider variety of colors.

AirPrint Black and White Laser Printers

There’s a wide variety of printers in Apple’s list of AirPrint printers Many of these printers are inkjet multi-function printers; the right type of printer for many jobs but not for all. If you need faster, less expensive, and sharper prints then a laser printer may be a better choice. In recent years the price of laser printers have been falling and now you can pick up a black and white laser printer for around $100.

Here are two black and white laser printers that support AirPrint and can be used from your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac, and Windows computer:

 HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn Printer

The P1102 can be connected via wi-fi to your wireless network and is a little cheaper than the P1606. The P1606 is faster than the P1102w but it must be connected to your network router with an ethernet cable.

AirPrint Enabled Inexpensive Color Laser Printers

Low cost color laser printers are a great option for people looking for high speed output and crisp color business graphics. On Apple’s list of AirPrint compatible printers is a pair of low cost laser printers, the HP LaserJet Pro CP1525nw Color Printer  and the HP LaserJet Pro CP1025nw Color Printer.
